What To Wear
What To Pack
Check the actual province and month. Toronto winter needs warm layers and grippy footwear; a summer city visit is a different packing list. Mountain weather can turn colder than the city forecast.
Money And Payments
Cash And Cards
Cards work for most everyday purchases in shops, hotels, and restaurants. Contactless is common. Keep a small Canadian dollar backup for tips or occasional cash only stops.
Travel Cards
Compare Canadian dollar conversion fees. If you are arriving from Detroit for a short visit, paying in US cash is not a reliable substitute for a card or Canadian dollars.
Tipping Culture
For a meal with table service, 15% to 20% is a useful guide. A checkout tip prompt does not make counter service tipping compulsory. Example: on a C$40 meal, 15% to 20% is C$6 to C$8. Check whether your tip screen calculates on the total after tax.
Getting Around
Getting Around Locally
Transit systems are local: Toronto, Montréal, and Vancouver have different tickets and networks. A card working on one city’s transit does not make it a national travel pass.
Traveling Between Stops
Canada is too large to judge by a map thumbnail. Compare flights for long distances, and check train or coach frequency before committing to an overland route. A Detroit to Windsor crossing needs border time.
Staying Connected
Using T Mobile In Canada
Canada is listed for international roaming on eligible T Mobile plans. Data allowances, speeds, and call charges depend on your plan. Check before you travel.
Mobile Data For This Trip
Canada may have different roaming allowances from other international destinations on your home plan. Download the route before a rural drive; city coverage is not a promise of signal throughout the countryside.
Where To Stay
Choosing Your Area
Choose a central transit base for a city break. For a road trip, parking and the next day’s drive matter more. My personal Canadian hotel reviews are not yet published.
Before You Arrive
Before You Fly
Air and land entry are different. Some visa exempt visitors need an eTA when flying but not for entry by land. Use Canada’s official checker for your nationality and travel method; US citizens have different rules.
Sources And My Visit
Practical information was researched and checked on 22 October 2026. My reviews describe my own visits. Area comparisons are planning advice, not hotels I claim to have inspected. Entry advice must match your passport, residency, route, and travel date.
