What To Wear
What To Pack
Pack walking shoes and layers for city days, plus rain protection. Winter markets can mean hours standing in the cold, so gloves and warm soles matter more than a stylish thin coat.
Money And Payments
Cash And Cards
Cards work at hotels, supermarkets, and many larger businesses, but cash still matters in Germany. Small restaurants, bakeries, bars, and local shops can be cash only or restrict which cards they take. Keep euros with you instead of assuming every venue is cashless.
Travel Cards
A foreign travel card is not the same as Germany’s domestic girocard. A shop displaying card payments can still have restrictions, so keep euros available.
Tipping Culture
Tell the server your total when you pay. For example, a €27 bill can become €30. Keep some cash for tips. Example: telling the server €30 on a €27 bill leaves €3. Say the total while paying; carry euros if you want the tip to go directly to the person.
Getting Around
Getting Around Locally
City transport tickets have local zones and validation rules. Check the operator before boarding. A regional transport pass is not automatically valid on long distance ICE or IC trains.
Traveling Between Stops
Germany’s ICE trains connect major cities; regional trains serve smaller stops. Compare the actual fare conditions and connection time. Do not plan a tight airport connection around an unbuffered train arrival.
Staying Connected
Using T Mobile In Germany
Germany is listed for international roaming on eligible T Mobile plans. Data allowances, speeds, and call charges depend on your plan. Check before you travel.
Mobile Data For This Trip
Keep rail tickets and the next connection downloaded. A data plan is useful for platform changes, but onboard WiFi should not be your only way to retrieve a ticket.
Where To Stay
Choosing Your Area
A city base near a useful U Bahn, S Bahn, or tram stop can save daily travel. Check late arrival access and neighborhood noise. These are planning criteria; my personal hotel shortlist is not published.
Before You Arrive
Before You Fly
Germany is part of Schengen, so days in neighboring Schengen countries count toward the same short stay allowance. Check the official EU entry systems before your trip and keep accommodation details available.
Sources And My Visit
Practical information was researched and checked on 22 October 2026. My reviews describe my own visits. Area comparisons are planning advice, not hotels I claim to have inspected. Entry advice must match your passport, residency, route, and travel date.
