What To Wear
What To Pack
Walking shoes are essential for cobbles and station stairs. Bring an outfit covering shoulders and knees for churches. Summer cities can be very hot; winter and mountain trips need a different suitcase.
Money And Payments
Cash And Cards
Cards are practical at hotels, shops, and restaurants. Keep a small euro backup for markets, tips, and a property charge payable separately. Check coperto and servizio on the bill rather than treating every extra line as a gratuity.
Travel Cards
Keep the physical card and check euro conversion fees. Ask the property how any local accommodation tax is collected so a separate charge does not surprise you.
Tipping Culture
A coperto is a cover charge, not a tip. A servizio charge is different. If service is included, extra is optional; a few euros for good service is enough. Example: a €40 bill with a coperto does not make that cover charge a tip. A few extra euros for good service are optional; check for servizio before adding more.
Getting Around
Getting Around Locally
Metros, buses, and trams vary by city. Follow the ticket’s activation or validation instructions before travel. A bank card tap system in one city is not a national ticket.
Traveling Between Stops
Compare Trenitalia and Italo for main routes. Regional and high speed tickets have different conditions. Use the actual station name; some cities have multiple stations and several airports.
Staying Connected
Using T Mobile In Italy
Italy is listed for international roaming on eligible T Mobile plans. Data allowances, speeds, and call charges depend on your plan. Check before you travel.
Mobile Data For This Trip
Save train tickets and accommodation access instructions offline. In old town streets, the nearest car drop off may differ from the front door, so download the final walking route too.
Where To Stay
Choosing Your Area
A historic centre suits walking, but check stairs, lifts, and vehicle access before booking. A room in a restricted traffic area can be awkward with a rental car. These are planning suggestions, not my hotel reviews.
Before You Arrive
Before You Fly
Italy is in Schengen. Check current EU entry systems and the total days across your Schengen itinerary. Confirm any local accommodation tax and how your property collects it.
Sources And My Visit
Practical information was researched and checked on 22 October 2026. My reviews describe my own visits. Area comparisons are planning advice, not hotels I claim to have inspected. Entry advice must match your passport, residency, route, and travel date.
