What To Wear
What To Pack
Loose clothes covering shoulders and knees suit town visits. Bring the mosque’s required covering outfit, plus shoes with grip and a modest swim outfit for wadis. Wadi Shab is a hike and swim, not a flip flop pool day.
Money And Payments
Cash And Cards
Cards usually work at hotels, supermarkets, larger restaurants, and established shops. Keep rials for souks, smaller purchases, and tips, especially when traveling outside the main cities.
Travel Cards
Check Omani rial conversion fees and carry a cash backup before a coastal or wadi trip. A working Muscat terminal is not a guarantee for every stop.
Tipping Culture
Tips are appreciated in restaurants and hotels. Rounding up a taxi fare is common. If choosing a restaurant thank you, calculate it in Omani rials rather than treating the rial like a dollar. For a driver, distinguish the agreed excursion fee from an optional tip.
Getting Around
Getting Around Locally
Muscat is spread along the coast. Taxis, booked rides, or a car suit multiple stops better than assuming everything is walkable. Confirm your return ride before leaving for a quieter beach or wadi.
Traveling Between Stops
Muscat, Dibab, and Wadi Shab need a road plan. Wadi Shab involves a boat crossing, walking, and swimming to reach the cave. Carry water and avoid wadis when heavy rain or flooding is forecast.
Staying Connected
Using T Mobile In Oman
Oman is listed for international roaming on eligible T Mobile plans. Data allowances, speeds, and call charges depend on your plan. Check before you travel.
Mobile Data For This Trip
Download the road route and pickup details before leaving Muscat. A working city data connection does not guarantee reception throughout a wadi. Tell someone your route and expected return.
Where To Stay
Choosing Your Area
A Muscat base suits city sightseeing; a coastal overnight can reduce the next day’s road time. Check how far the property is from your actual route and whether you need your own vehicle.
Before You Arrive
Before You Fly
Use Royal Oman Police’s visa eligibility checker; exemptions have conditions and are not identical for every passport. Keep onward travel and accommodation details ready. Check weather before any wadi trip.
Sources And My Visit
Practical information was researched and checked on 22 October 2026. My reviews describe my own visits. Area comparisons are planning advice, not hotels I claim to have inspected. Entry advice must match your passport, residency, route, and travel date.

Wadi Ash Shab
Wadi Shab is not just a hike, it’s a whole experience. If you’re planning to go, read this first because it’s absolutely worth it, but only if you come prepared.
