What To Wear
What To Pack
My visit was one Christmas night, so I do not present it as a full country tour. For winter, bring warm layers and grippy shoes. Mountain weather is a different forecast from the station in town.
Money And Payments
Cash And Cards
Cards and contactless payments are widely available. Keep a small Swiss franc backup for tips and smaller purchases. Switzerland uses francs, not euros; choose francs if a terminal offers a conversion.
Travel Cards
Switzerland uses Swiss francs. Check CHF conversion rather than assuming a euro balance or EU roaming package covers this part of the trip.
Tipping Culture
Service is included. Rounding up is a normal thank you; a large extra percentage is not expected. Example: rounding a CHF 47 meal to CHF 50 leaves CHF 3. Service is included, so an extra amount is your choice.
Getting Around
Getting Around Locally
Trains, buses, boats, and city transport connect well, but coverage depends on the ticket. Compare your exact journeys before buying a Swiss Travel Pass or Half Fare option.
Traveling Between Stops
Mountain railways and cable cars may have separate fares, discounts, or seasonal closures. Check the last descent before an outing. A national pass is not a promise that every mountain ride is free.
Staying Connected
Using T Mobile In Switzerland
Switzerland is listed for international roaming on eligible T Mobile plans. Data allowances, speeds, and call charges depend on your plan. Check before you travel.
Mobile Data For This Trip
Check Switzerland specifically in your roaming plan; it is outside the EU and is not included in every European bundle. Download your ticket and mountain connection before leaving town.
Where To Stay
Choosing Your Area
A town beside a useful rail connection can suit several day trips. A mountain hotel can mean limited evening access. Check the last connection and whether luggage needs a shuttle.
Before You Arrive
Before You Fly
Switzerland is in Schengen but uses Swiss francs. Check current EU border guidance for your passport. On holiday dates, verify restaurant hours and transport rather than assuming normal weekday service.
Sources And My Visit
Practical information was researched and checked on 22 October 2026. My reviews describe my own visits. Area comparisons are planning advice, not hotels I claim to have inspected. Entry advice must match your passport, residency, route, and travel date.
