Mackinac Island: A Hidden Gem in Michigans U.P

Hey there, roamers! Guess what?

I just got back from the most magical place in the Midwest—Mackinac Island! 🌸🏝️

This little gem is packed with unique history, charming quirks, and more lilacs than you can imagine. Buckle up, because I’m about to spill all the deets about my June adventure to this enchanting island. And yes, it was still pretty chilly!

A Step Back in Time into Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island is like stepping into a time machine. There are no cars—zilch, zero, nada! 🚴‍♂️🚶‍♀️ The only way to get around is by bike, horse-drawn carriage, or your own two feet. It’s a refreshing break from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Oldest Grocery Store in the World

Did you know that Mackinac Island is home to the oldest grocery store in the world? Doud's Market has been serving the island since 1884. Walking in there feels like a slice of history, with its old-world charm and local goodies. 🛒🕰️

The Post Office That Doesn’t Deliver Mail

Yep, you heard that right. The post office on Mackinac Island doesn’t deliver mail to your doorstep. Instead, you’ve got to pick up your letters and packages. It’s a quirky little detail that just adds to the island’s charm. 📬✨

Amazon on Mackinac Island

Wondering how Amazon works here? It’s pretty straightforward. Packages get delivered to the ferry dock on the mainland, then transported over to the island and sorted at the post office. After that, they get delivered to your door by horse-drawn carriage! It’s a mix of modern convenience and old-school charm. 📦🚤🐴

Fudge, Fudge, and More Fudge!

One cannot talk about Mackinac Island without mentioning its legendary fudge. 🍫🎩 Stroll down Main Street, and you'll be greeted by the sweet aroma wafting from numerous fudge shops. Murdick's Fudge has been crafting these delectable treats since 1887, and believe me, it's worth every calorie!

The Grandeur of Grand Hotel

Speaking of grandeur, let's talk about the iconic Grand Hotel. This majestic beauty boasts the world's longest porch, offering breathtaking views of the Straits of Mackinac. 🏰⛰️ The elegance, the history, and that enormous patio—it's a must-visit.

Getting There: The Ferry Experience

To get to Mackinac Island, you’ve got to take a ferry from Mackinaw City or St. Ignace. And there are 2 ferry companies. I took Star Line but, Shepler's Ferry is another great option. The ride itself is about 20-30 minutes, and the views are spectacular. The ferry runs frequently, from early morning to late evening, so you’ve got plenty of options.

Pricing: A round trip ticket is around $30, but if you plan to stay a bit longer, consider the 2-day unlimited pass for $52. It’s a steal if you want to explore the island at your leisure!

Ferry Hours: First ferry usually around 7 AM and the last one back around 9 PM. Check their website for the exact schedule: Shepler's Ferry or Star Line Ferry.

Lilac Festival: A Blooming Spectacle

If you're lucky enough to visit during the Lilac Festival in mid-June (usually around June 7-16), don't miss it! The island bursts with lilacs of every hue, accompanied by parades, events, and a contagious festive spirit. 🌸🎉 More info at Mackinac Island Lilac Festival.

Seasonal Charms and Quiet Winter Months

While June brought vibrant lilacs and bustling streets, Mackinac Island has its quiet side too. Winter months, from November to April, see the island in hibernation mode. ❄️🌬️ Most shops and hotels close, creating a serene, snow-covered paradise for those seeking solitude.

Final Notes

Mackinac Island is a place of contrasts—a bustling summer retreat and a tranquil winter wonderland. Whether you're drawn by the lilacs, the historic charm, or simply the allure of island life, Mackinac promises an unforgettable adventure.

So, my fellow roamers, pack your bags, grab some fudge, and set sail for Mackinac Island—it's a journey you won't soon forget!

Until next time, happy roaming! 🌅🚲🌺
