Egypts’ New Great Gate: The Smooth Experience You Didn’t Know Existed at the Pyramids

If you’ve ever been to the pyramids and left feeling annoyed, scammed, or straight-up overwhelmed just know: that era is officially dead. In April 2025, Egypt opened the brand-new Great Gate entrance to the Giza Pyramids, and it’s giving order, air-conditioning, and actual peace of mind. I documented the entire experience in a full YouTube video, but here’s the real rundown of what you need to know before you go.

📍 Let’s Get One Thing Straight
The Great Gate is NOT near or connected to the Grand Egyptian Museum. They’re both in Giza, but they are nowhere near walking distance, and there's no shortcut between them once you’re inside. So if you’re planning to do both, treat them as separate day plans.
🎟️ Getting In: Finally, Some Structure
The gate experience feels like Egypt finally said, “let’s act like this is a wonder of the world.”
Security is smooth bags scanned, walk-through metal detectors
No crowds of vendors or scammers only ticketed visitors can enter
Kiosks let you buy everything:
Entry to the complex
Add-ons like going inside Khufu or seeing the Solar Boat Museum
You can pay with card, cash, or tap-to-pay
👉🏽 Pro tip: Buy all your tickets at the start. I tried buying an interior pyramid ticket via the QR code later and had no service couldn’t load the pass, and they wouldn’t let me in.
🚌 The Bus Breakdown: Don’t Sleep on This Part
There are three bus lines you can take after the gate:
Two of them head to on-site restaurants: 9 Pyramids & Khufu’s Restaurant
One main line takes you on a 6-stop pyramid loop
💡 All buses are air-conditioned, and may have different logos (don’t worry — they’re all official). They run frequently, about every 10 minutes (hop on hop off style) and are comfortable, with charging ports and seating.
Getting to the Great Pyramid (Khufu)?
You must get off at Stop 4 and transfer to another bus to reach Stop 6.Nobody announces this you’ll only know if someone tells you or if you read this (you're welcome).
🚻 Bathrooms Aren’t Free: Here’s How It Works
Bathrooms are available at most of the 6 stops, but they’re not free. You’ll need to:
Buy a prepaid bathroom access card (like a tap card)
Load money on it
Tap in at any bathroom along the way
It’s super efficient once you have the card just don’t expect to pay with cash at the actual restroom.
🛍️ Each Stop Has Extras
Most pyramid stops come with:
Cafes and food stalls
Souvenirs
Charging stations
Designated photo areas (some are legit gorgeous)
Bathrooms if you have the card
And best of all no vendors are harassing you every five seconds like in the past.
🎥 Can You Film?
Yes, and no one cared. I had my Insta360 in full view, and not a single person said anything.I even saw someone with a full-on DSLR camera, and they were left alone. So if you’re trying to vlog, capture content, or just document your trip you’re good. Just don’t be obnoxious about it and you’re fine.
